Celebrating our WTSDA's 25th Silver Anniversary

On November 24th our studio celebrated (as did many Association studios everywhere) our organization's milestone accomplishment of 25 years with a special birthday party. Friends and family joined in with special activities and a potluck. Memories and history of WTSDA were displayed (courtesy of the WTSDA 25th Anniversary DVD) and a WTSDA anthem singing lesson was led by BSBN Leslie Dercole. The party continued with a spirited 25 year board-breaking session. Boards were symbolically marked for each year beginning with 1982 as our students assembled by seniority for the break. Special dedication plaques were presented to our outstanding instructors Sig Luther and Barbara Bellini recognizing their long and continue devotion to our dojang. A balloon stomp game and line dancing got everyone up out of their chairs and onto the floor. A birthday cake put the icing on this unique family fun celebration. Congratulations and Happy Birthday to our worldwide family.

Training, Nature & Connecting

An obstacle course, creative kicking drills, meditation, forms practice, games, and jogging through the spray of the water jets were all part of the fun of our recent "outdoor class." The special class was held at Mountain Hawk Park, one of Chula Vista's newest located near the scenic Otay Lakes reservoir. The backdrop of the Eastern Mountains added to the concept of training in nature and connecting to the energies of the natural environment. Parents and families accompanying the students also enjoyed the outing. Stay tuned for information of our next outdoor class.

18th Annual USA Masters Camp

April 1st.
One hundred and thirty-three WTSDA masters and candidates from around the world including Master Larry Dercole assembled at the University of North Alabama in Florence for the 18th WTSDA Masters Camp. This 56 hour annual program included intense training on numerous topics including Qi-Gong, acupuncture, sword mastery, kendo, nutrition, joint health and hyung, just to name a few. The program is directed by Grandmaster J. C. Shin and is the main vehicle to maintain uniformity and standards throughout our world's organization. Attending this event is by invitation only and a requirement for maintaining rank and promotion within our WTSDA. The growth of the WTSDA has generated the need to establish two additional camps held which are also held annually - the European Masters Camp held in Germany and the Latin American Masters Camp held in Argentina. The WTSDA Board-of-Directors meeting also coinciding with the camp provides the opportunity to discuss and vote on important issues. One isuue this year was the establishing of "World Tang Soo Do Day" a festive celebrating our family membership around the world. The kickoff for this event will be this coming November when WTSDA celebrates its 25th year anniversary. Stay tuned for our plans for this event.

Empowerment Self-defense

On March 10th TSDKI hosted the very special Empowerment Self-defense Training session with Dr. Tom Cary and Master Steve Holden of Albuqerque, New Mexico. This all day intensive and informative program provided physiological specifics and no nonsense defense techniques for genuine protection. Dr. Tom Cary explains how to absolutely not become a victim, particularly to those with no previous martial arts training. The program is generally geared toward women and teenage girls, however many of our regional instructors attended the event. We plan to offer this program again in the near future. Special thanks to TSDKI Instructor Sig Luther for organizing the event and thanks again to Dr. Cary and Master Holden. Those interested in the next Empowerment Class may leave a comment on this blog and we will contact you.

Black Belt Promotions

Our February Regional Black Belt Class drew Masters, DAN and Cho DAN Bo members from various points of the Southern California to the Chula Vista Dojang. This refining of skills, polishing of spirits, and nourishing of friendships are part of the instruction that helps to provide leadership training to our seniors and instructors. Included in the session was a DAN presentation ceremony to which we take great honor in announcing that two of our members received official DAN certification.
